A Simple Magic Trick Gets Teacher Fired!?

What a sad day for magic when a simple toothpick disappearance trick costs a Florida substitute teacher his job. Magic and creativity should be a vital part of schooling and lessons, rather than forbidden. According to the TampaBays10.com website:

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.

"I get a call the middle of the day from the supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue. You can't take any more assignments. You need to come in right away,'" he said.

Piculas was charged with "Wizardry"! Imagine that!? I wonder if punishment for that is detention at Hogwarts!?

I would hope that teachers would be applauded and congratulated rather than shunned or fired for finding creative ways, such as magic, to keep the attention of students and aide in lesson plans. There are many ways for teachers, parents or day care providers to entertain and teach with magic.

Supercans is accompanied by a DVD that teaches you everything you need to know in English and Spanish. Use these amazing gimmicks for anything from predictions to productions! The Wizard's Apprentice is the only magic shop in the USA authorized to carry Supercans. This item is extremley limited and is not featured on our web site. For ordering information please call our order line @ 1.866.920.1475. Please ask for Gloria.

From Supreme Magic comes Joe Lefler's Slate of Mind. This is a state of the art Mental Epic. Three absolutely free choices all predicted ahead of time by the magician. That's right; a Mental Epic without a force! Now that's real magic! These are beautifully made and incorporate magnetic flaps, which not only look better but make the working smooth as silk.

This ia another item that is in stock for a limited time only so please call the number above to place your order.

Want to make a good impression? Then you need James Biss' Impressionable Mind Board. This is one of the most innocent looking secret gadgets available to the modern mentalist. The spek writes or draws anything on a piece of paper and stashes it away. Real time, the mentalist is able divine what the spek is thinking of every time. Impressionable Mind Board comes with everything you need, including a truly killer routine, honed over years of performance by Mr. Biss.

Speaking of killer, I want to mention a "hidden" mentalism gem, Killer Elite! This is the kind of product I love and that appeals to magicians and mentalists. A simple premise woven into extremely well thought out routine with an engaging story. If you didn't do the trick and just showed the props and told the tale, this would be great. But do the trick; you deserve the inevitable applause! Killer Elite is in stock and ready to ship!

At The Shop & On The Road

On 4/14/08, Rich Tieger, The Hollywood Balloon Man, wowed the toddlers from Tutor Time with a pre-school program held at Wizard's. No balloon left unblown! If you know of any other schools, camps or programs looking for an innovative field trip guaranteed to entertain the kids, contact Jack for booking info.
Jack has also recently entered into an arrangement with Tutor Time to provide an after school and camp program teaching magic to the kiddies. Local businesses should be proud to support enterprises like this that direct our children in positive directions. Again, contact Wizard's for the low down.

Jack has also been doing the Career Day rounds local elementary schools. Could this have anything to do with being the proud father of a five year old daughter? Hmm.

Jack's Career Day presentation is not just about the joys of being a professional magician. He also shares the trials and triumphs he has experienced in growing his own business. Jack knows his stuff and knows how to connect with young minds and hearts and the feedback has been extraordinarily positive.

Jack was also busy performing for the big kids these last few weeks. A highlight was on 4/17/08 at the Florida LeGrande Resort on the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale where Jack performed magic for the South Florida Interactive Marketing Association's Casino Night. The event was a hit and special thanks to FDMA for the special arrangements.

Let's all fall out and support Jack when he performs at Dada's Restaurant and Lounge on 4/30/08. Dada's is a renovated circa-1920's home with superb food, a great bar and a hip crowd. Join Jack for two shows starting at 11:00 p.m. He'll be presenting the trademark Maxwell Magic in this wonderful setting and wants to see all of his old friends wining, dining, oohing and aahing.

Dada's is located at 52 N. Swinton Ave. Delray Beach, FL 33444
For more info, call the restaurant at 561-330-3232 or give Jack a holler.

That's it for this newsletter. Don't forget to contact me with questions, comments, and, yes, even criticism at Dr.Bill at WizardsApprenticeMagic.com. I want to hear from the customers so the Scroll can magically meet your every need. Until next time!

The Wizard's Scroll March 27, 2008

Hello Superfriends!

Check this out. It's been about a month or so since I last contacted you. I've become so busy performing and trying to wear all the hats around here that I've asked my good buddy, Dr. Bill, to take over the reins of our bimonthly newsletter. From now on, he'll be writing "The Wizard's Scroll" to keep you up to date on all the action at The Wizard's Apprentice. Before I pass the wand to the Doc, I would like to tell you a little bit about my homeboy. Dr. Bill Cushman has been an accomplished magician for some time now, over 30 years to be un-exact. He's well known throughout the "mental" community (if you get the chance to meet him, you'll know why) and has just released "MirrorBil". An awesome mentalism effect with cards. This booklet is already a sell out and the ink's not even dry! Basically I'm saying that me and Bill are down like 4 flat tires. So with no further adieu, here's Bill! . . . .

Thanks, Jack, this should be a hoot! I'm looking forward to getting to know all the customers and providing them with regular updates on the happenings here at Wizard's.

I want the Scroll to be "customer friendly" so please feel free to drop me a line at dr.bill at wizardsapprentice.com any time. I need your suggestions on how the site and this newsletter can better serve you.

So what has been keeping Jack so busy of late you ask? Let me tell you! Besides all the responsibilities of owning the best magic shop in South Florida, Jack has been performing his unique brand of magic all over town. The gigs keep rolling in and Jack keeps rolling out. Of particular note was last month's show for Morris and Reynolds' Insurance Company http://morrisandreynolds.com/. Bob Reynolds has been a wonderful customer at the shop. His enthusiasm runneth over and trickled down to all in attendance. It should have been a video taped! Thank you Bob.

On March 20th, Jack was the featured guest speaker at the Florida Direct Marketing Association luncheon. ( http://fdma.org/) Not only did he share the story of his own growth as a businessman, he performed stand up and close-up magic for a very enthusiastic crowd. Jack wants to send a special thank you to Keith Fletcher, president of the FDMA. Thanks Keith!

If you sign up for the Wizard's Scroll newsletter, this section would be a special discount code off of your next magic purchase at The Wizard's Apprentice Magic Shop in Hollywood. so, sign up for the newsletter by emailing wizardlymight at aol dot com.

You might want to use that discount on all the great new magic from Masuda now available at The Wizard's Apprentice. I call myself a mentalist, but I love the effect "WOW!" That is one cool, quick changing card. This is the kind of effect that reminds me of why I got into magic in the first place. And for a stunning bit of mental magic, don't miss Frozen In Time. The spek names any time and you show a photo encased in Lucite of a pocket watch set to exactly the same moment. Frozen In Time is as fun to perform as it is to "watch!"

OK, it is time for me to sign off. Keep your eye out for the next Wizard's Scroll in just two weeks. And don't forget to send me your questions, comments and suggestions at
